ABOUT SONIA CAKES
Sonia Cakes was a seed that was sowed on my wedding day, however baking is something I’ve been passionate about for a long time.
I first learnt to bake when I was 13. I watched my cousin, who baked frequently and inspired me to learn. I would help to beat the eggs and cream the sugar and butter. I quickly learnt the necessary skills needed to bake various cakes and treats. When she baked and decorated her own wedding cake I was in awe.
As I grew older, I regularly made a variety of cakes for family and friends birthdays and other special occasions. Some family favourites are: pineapple upside down cake, sponge cream cakes, carrot, banana, chocolate and my speciality – traditional Jamaican fruit cake.
As I progressed I was confident with how my cakes tasted, but longed to be able to master the art of decorating with professional precision. I admired decorated cakes in shop windows, magazines and would spend endless evenings scrolling through Pinterest and researching top bakers.
When my wedding day came, I ordered my dream cake, this was one of the most exciting wedding purchases for me. When the standard of decoration didn’t meet my expectations or match the cost, I was disappointed but inspired, I decided to perfect my skills with the goal of owning my own business.
I decided to leave my day job and invest all my time and energy in studying, practicing and perfecting the art of cake decorating. In college, I learned the core techniques: cake embroidery, rolling, cutting, quilting, embossing, frilling, moulding, piping and wrapping. Since then I have found my real passion – flower making.
Decorating to me is very therapeutic and is especially rewarding when I see the joy and happiness in my clients’ reactions.
The best thing about it is that I learn something new from each project.
